Though the stand works smoothly and has no bends, and the mercury is intact and it still tells temperature, the backing glass has a number of cracks. It has been repaired such that all the glass is securely in place.
Every now and then you come across one of those “Wow!” pieces.
This is one of them. This is a Tiffany Studios Large Handkerchief box in the Grapevine pattern. Note that it has four rows of beading, and the variegated green and white glass even has a distinctive streak of blue. I’ve actually been holding on to this one because I’m reluctant to let it go. Frankly, it is not only in stunningly good condition, it is also uniquely clean.

Marks: Stamped Tiffany Studios New York 824
This piece is really in amazingly good shape. It is clearly stamped, “Tiffany Studios New York” and item number stamped clearly as well: 824. All the glass is perfectly intact, the feet are present, and the hinge works smoothly. The Tiffany slag glass is a gorgeous green with streaks of white, and the bronze is a perfect patina. It must have been stored in a container because there is almost no dust. My mother was an antique dealer when I was a kid, which started my interest in Tiffany. So I have seen many pieces from Tiffany Studios, Tiffany Furnaces and Tiffany Favrile glass, but I have only seen a few pieces as fine as this one. This is a Tiffany Studios New York Grapevine desk set postal scale meant to be used at a desk. Grapevine is a subset of the “Etched Metal and Glass” Tiffany pattern. These pieces which combine bronze overlay with colored glass generally come in gold bronze and white glass, or have a brown bronze and green glass. The brown bronze often has a patina from the natural aging that adds hints of red and green. This Grapevine piece has the darker bronze with white slag glass with some faint caramel coloring. It was in production between approximately 1900 and 1920.

This Tiffany scale is in exceptionally good condition. It is one of the cleanest pieces I have ever come across, and the markings on the scale are really clear. All of the glass is intact, and the scale works perfectly. The platter where you place your letter for weighing is also almost perfectly flat (these thin round disks are prone to bending). There is a slight ding on the bottom in one corner as depicted in the photos, but it is almost unnoticeable unless you look at the underside.
There are few Tiffany Desk Set pieces that are this clean as this one and still functional. Tiffany Studios, of course, descended from Tiffany Furnaces under Louis Comfort Tiffany’s guidance, so this item would make a distinguished addition to a desk or in an office.
